Sabarimala (Kerala), Nov 16: The world famous hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa here was opened for the 60-days long Mandalapooja-Makaravilakku pilgrimage season.
The sanctum sanctorum was opened at 1700 hrs yesterday by outgoing head priest (Melsanthi) TM Unnikrishnan Namboodiri in the presence of Chief Priest (Tantri) Kandararu Maheswararu Mohanararu in an atmosphere charged with devotion. After lighting the lamp inside the sanctum sanctorum, the outgoing head priest transferred the fire to a larger fire place, (Aazhi), in front of the holy 18-steps at the Lower Tirumuttom, where the devotees burn the broken pieces of ghee-filled coconuts. Later, the installation ceremony of new head priest AV Unnikrishnan Namboothiri was conducted in front of the Sreekovil at 1800 hrs. Aneesh Namboodiri was installed as the new head priest at the Malikappuram Devi temple.
The Chief Priest conducted ‘Kalasabhishekam’ on Unnikrishnan Nampoothiri and was led into the Sreekovil for passing on the 'Moolamanthram' of Lord Ayyappa. The ceremony of handing over the key of the Sreekovil was held after the closure of the shrine at 2200 hrs. As per the custom, the outgoing head priest handed over the keys to the Devaswom Administrative Officer and thereupon the key was govem to the newly sworn head priest. As practice no ritual was conducted at the Sreekovil last evening. The auspicious ‘Mandala Pooja Maholsavam’ began with Maha Ganapthi Homam early this morning. It is expected that more than 4.5 crore devotees will visit the temple during this festival season. The 'Mandala Pooja' would be held on December 27 marking the culmination of 41-day-long 'Mandalam' pilgrimage season. 'Mandala Pooja' will be performed after adorning the Ayyappa Idol with the 'Thanka Anki,' weighing 420 sovereigns, offered to Lord Ayyappa by the Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma of the erstwhile Royal Family of Travancore in 1972. The 'Thanka Anki,' being kept in the strong-room of Aranmula Parthasarathy Temple, will be brought here for the ceremony. Later, the temple will close at 2200 hrs after 'Athazha Pooja.' The temple will be reopened on December 30 at 1730 hrs for 'Makaravilakku' festival. The 'Makaravilakku Day' falls on January 14. The temple will be closed on the morning of January 20, marking the culmination of the Makaravilakku festival. UNI
