Shillong, Feb 8: SP Thapa, General Secretary of the state unit of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) alleged BJP of trying to bring 'Hindutva" across the country and said the "change" that saffron party is promising in Meghalaya ahead of the Assembly polls, it will forget later.
"BJP is trying to bring Hindutva everywhere. Today, the change BJP is promising in Meghalaya, it will forget about it later as RSS won't allow it to happen. If BJP comes to power, the first change it will bring is by imposing ban on beef," Mr Thapa told UNI here.
Taking a dig at party polls slogan "Time for change, time for BJP ", he said,"What change BJP is talking about ? What people should eat ? What religion they should follow? Now, it is up to the people of Meghalaya to decide whether they want these kind of changes."
"BJP introduced GST. Being a consumer state, it is not good for Meghalaya," the NCP leader stated.
He said that during campaigning, NCP will raise the issue of alleged corruption of the Mukul Sangma led Congress government.
On the issue of corruption, Mr Thapa said, his party is promising to set a Vigilance Commission (a non-political body) where reputed organisations and individuals would be invited to be part of the Commission.
He said the other promises of the party are-- to bring transparency in system, create a separate Ministry for traditional institution to enable direct funding, education policy to focus more on skill development, provide clean water and sanitation, open genetic medicine shop to promote local herbal medicine.
For the Minorities, Mr Thapa said," NCP will ensure that suitable steps are taken for them."
He also claimed that the party has its stronghold in Garo Hills and eyeing to get maximum seats from there.
"We have fielded around 25 candidates out of 60 seats. We are mainly focusing on the Garo Hills. It is our stronghold," Mr Thapa stated.
On being asked about post-poll alliance, he said, "If any of the party falls short of majority, we will support on certain conditions like-- the party's roadmap for development of Meghalaya and then we will decide or else sit in Opposition."
The polling for the Assembly elections is scheduled to be held on February 27 and the results would be announced on March 3. UNI
