Srinagar, Feb 16: Only one-way traffic has been resumed on the national highway, linking the
Kashmir valley with the rest of the country, after remaining suspended for
about four days due to snow and landslides.
However, the national highway, linking Ladakh region with
Kashmir and 86-km-long historic Mughal road also remain closed.
'We have resumed one-way traffic on the Srinagar-Jammu national highway and on Friday vehicles from Jammu will ply to Kashmir valley,' a traffic police official told.
However, he also said, no vehicle will be allowed from opposite direction today.
The highway was closed on Monday following fresh snowfall and slippery road conditions. However, on Wednesday traffic was resumed for some time before the highway was closed again due to landslides.
The Border Roads Organisation (BRO), responsible for the maintainance of the highway worked almost round the clock to clear the landslides and put through the highway.
It was only the last evening, traffic was allowed, he said, adding only stranded vehicles were allowed from both sides to move towards their respective destinations.
A traffic police official posted at Qazigund told UNI over phone this morning that still stranded vehicles are being cleared.
He said majority of stranded vehicles have been cleared and the process was still going on.
Meanwhile, the national highway, connecting Ladakh with Kashmir remained closed since December last year. There was fresh snowfall at Sonamarg, Zojila pass and Meenmarg on 434-km-long Srinagar-Leh national highway early this week. The road is also very slippery due to below freezing temperature, officials said adding the road is likely to reopen after April.
Meanwhile, the 86-km-long historic Mughal road, connecting Shopian in south Kashmir with Rajouri and Poonch in Jammu region also remained closed since December last year. There was also fresh snowfall on the highway, including at Pir-ki-Gali, Harpora and Shopian during the past 24 hours. The road is likely to reopen in May, they said. UNI
