New Delhi, Mar 9: Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Friday nominated Ms Kahkashan Parveen
of the Janata Dal (United) on the panel of vice-chairpersons of the Council of
States.
'In deference to the wishes of members expressed
on the occasion of International Women’s Day yesterday, I am nominating Ms
Parveen on the panel with effect from April 3,'Mr Naidu said when the House met
for the day.
Ms Parveen has, Mr Naidu said, been a mayor and chairperson of Bihar Mahila Aayog.
She would replace Basavaraj Patil, whose term expires on April 2, Mr Naidu added.
Ms Parveen will be the only woman in the current panel of Vice-chairpersons which includes Bharatiya Janata Party's Satyanarayan Jatiya, Tiruchi Siva (Dravida Munnetra Kazgham), TK Rangarajan (Communist Party of India-Marxist), Bhubaneswar Kalita (Indian National Congress), and Sukhendu Sekhar Ray of the All India Trinamool Congress.
According to the rules of the House, the Chairman nominates from among the members up to six presiding officers who conduct the proceedings in the absence of the chairman and the deputy chairman. UNI
