Panaji, May 21: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will flag-in INSV Tarini at INS Mandovi near the city, the location the sail boat had set sail from on September 10, 2017, today.
A team of six women officers of the Indian Navy had set out to circumnavigate the globe on an Indian-built sail boat INSV Tarini. The expedition titled ‘Navika Sagar Parikrama’, was aimed at promoting women empowerment aligned with the Government of India’s thrust for ‘NariShakti’. It also aimed to promote ocean sailing by the Indian Navy and inspire youth to develop a spirit of adventure. This was the first-ever Indian circumnavigation of the globe by an all-women crew to circumnavigate the globe.
Ms Sitharaman had flagged-off Indian Naval Sailing Vessel Tarini with an all women crew 10 September 2017. Tarini was skippered by Lieutenant Commander Vartika Joshi and the crew comprised Lieutenant Commanders Pratibha Jamwal and Swati P and Lieutenants Aishwarya Boddapati, S Vijaya Devi and Payal Gupta.
The expedition was sailed in six legs, with stop-overs at five ports namely Fremantle (Australia), Lyttleton (New Zealand), Port Stanley (Falklands), Cape Town (South Africa) and Mauritius. INSV Tarini sailed over 21600 Nm, visited five countries, sailed across four continents, three oceans, passed south of three Capes and crossed the equator twice over the last eight months of her sailing since she left Goa.
Before starting their voyage the crew had met up with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and explained the details of their voyage. To prepare for their voyage, the crew trained for an initial year under Capt Dilip Donde, India's first solo circumnavigator who retired in December 2016. UNI
