New Delhi, Nov 24: Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar-led JD(U) will contest 80-100 seats in the upcoming Gujarat assembly elections, mainly in the segments dominated by tribals and Patels.
Talking to UNI, General Secretary of JD(U), Sanjay Jha, said, “We are contesting the election as a friendly match. Earlier, we had base in the state but due to bipolar party system our base got shrunk. Now, we are trying to revive it.” The JD(U) is leading the Bihar Government in alliance with the BJP and therefore being asked about its impact on the coalition. To this, Mr Jha said, “It will have no impact on our coalition. During Atalji era, we had also fought against each other in Gujarat. In 2012 also, we contested and won one seat." The election for 182-seat will be held in two phases on December 9 and December 14 and counting will be done on December 18. For the first phase of election, 24 candidates from the party have filed their nominations. The area mainly covers Navsari, Bharuch, Rajkot, Surat and Junagarh which have sizeable tribal populations. Further, the senior leader added that if the party won any seat, it would support the BJP in forming the government. On Bihar Chief Minister’s campaign in the state, he said, “If the state unit asks for his campaigning, he will surely go for it. Else, all the senior leaders will hold the public rally and seek votes for our candidates.”
On Thursday, the Delhi High Court has disposed off a plea filed by the disgruntled JD(U) leader Sharad Yadav-faction for freezing of the party symbol “Arrow”.
Prior to this, the Election Commission of India in its order had recognised Nitish Kumar-led faction of the party as the real JD(U). UNI
