New Delhi, Nov 15: President Ram Nath Kovind on Wednesday bowed down to the great freedom fighter Birsa Munda on his 117th anniversary even as he greeted people of Jharkhand on the 17th Statehood Day.
Mr Kovind, who reached Ranchi for a state visit in the morning, went to the Birsa Chowk and paid tributes at the statue of the Tribal freedom fighter. The President posted on Twitter, 'Tributes to freedom fighter and national hero 'Dharti Aba' Birsa Munda on his birth anniversary. I am happy to be visiting Jharkhand on this day #PresidentKovind.' Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to the social micro-blogging site to pay his tributes. 'I bow to Bhagwan Birsa Munda on his Jayanti. His indomitable courage is a source of motivation. Inspired by the life of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, we are working towards empowerment of our tribal communities, who are India's pride,' he added. People of Jharkhand, a mineral-rich state carved out from Southern Bihar in 2000, worship the legendary freedom fighter as God. The state, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the country's mineral resources, celebrates its foundation day on the birth anniversary of Birsa Munda, giving a perfect tribute to the freedom fighter, who fought for the rights of Tribals more than a century ago, only with bows and arrows.
