New Delhi, Jan 22: Delhi Police has arrested ideologue of Students Islamic Movement of India Abdul
Subhan Qureshi alias Tauqeer, one of the most wanted fugitives on the National
Investigation Agency list and the mastermind behind the 2008 Gujarat serial
blasts, from the capital, police said on Monday.
Subhan was held after a brief exchange of fire
from the Ghazipur area on Saturday evening by a Special Cell team, after a
tip-off.
He has been sent for 14 days police remand by the district court, DCP (Special Cell) Pramod Singh Kushwah told reporters here.
As the dreaded terrorist was arrested few days before the Republic Day celebrations in the capital, there were questions whether he was planning something for the big day, but police has ruled out any such possibilities, saying that he was in Delhi to meet some of his associates with an intention of reviving Indian Mujahedeen, the banned terror outfit, whose networks were hard hit as most of their leaders were either held by the police, or absconding.
The alleged bomb maker and one of the founding members of IM was wanted by the NIA in the Kerala Wagmon case with a reward of Rs four lakh on his head.
A suspect in the Mumbai 2011 blasts, he was said to be a crucial facilitator for explosives.
According to police, Subhan was living in Biratnagar area of Nepal with fake documents and had strong connections in the states of UP, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka and Gujarat.
He worked as an English teacher during his stay in Nepal and even travelled to Saudi Arabia on a Nepalese passport between 2015 -17 for the similar purpose of revival of IM, police said. UNI
