Chennai, Mar 6: After being highly critical of lyricist Vairamuthu for his remarks on Goddess Andal, BJP National Secretary H Raja on Tuesday landed in a fresh controversy for his tweet on Dravidian leader and Rationalist leader Periyar, that triggered instant condemnation and strong action against him from leaders of various political parties in Tamil Nadu.
Following the removal of Communist Revolutionary Vladimir Lenin's statue in Tripura soon after the CPI(M) was dethroned by the BJP in the just concluded Assembly poll, Mr Raja tweeted that the statue of social reformer Periyar in Tamil Nadu would also be razed down, just like the Lenin’s statue in Tripura.
However, he removed the tweet from his official Twitter handle after political parties condemned it and demanded punitive action against him, including detention under the Goondas Act, for repeatedly speaking in
a manner that was aimed at instigating violence.
Leaders of DMK, MDMK, Dravidar Kazhagam, the Left parties and the VCK have demanded stern action against him.
In his tweet Raja said “Who is Lenin and what is the connection between Lenin and India? What connection has India with Communists? Lenin's statue has been removed in Tripura. Today it is Lenin's statue in Tripura, tomorrow it will be the statue of caste fanatic EVR Ramasamy.”
Talking to reporters, DMK Working President M K Stalin demanded the arrest of Mr Raja under the Goondas Act.
'No one has the right to touch Periyar's statue. Raja has been repeatedly making remarks aimed at instigating violence. My view is that he should be arrested under the Goondas Act and sent to jail', he added.
Firebrand MDMK leader Vaiko and Dravida Kazhagam leader Suba Veerapandian challenged Raja to touch a Periyar statue anywhere in Tamil Nadu.
BJP State Unit President Ms Tamizhisai Soundararajan disowned the remarks of Raja and said it was his personal statement.
'The BJP has no connection with it', she added.
Angrily reacting to Raja's tweet, VCK leader Thol Thirumavalavan said even the ancestors of Raja could raze down the statue of Periyar.
Meanwhile, activists of Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam petitioned the Coimabatore City Police demanding registration of a criminal case against Raja for his controversial tweet. UNI
