Kolkata, Apr 16: Employment generation in rural areas through Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) has been one of the priority areas of the State Panchayat and Rural Development Department. 
The performance of the Bengal in this regard has been exemplary.
During 2015-16, with a labour budget for the creation of 22.20 crore person-days, the State actually surpassed the target and created 28.66 person-days of employment.
During 2016-17, with a labour budget of 18.77 crore person-days, the state could achieve 23.56 person-days.
In the last fiscal year, 2017-18, the state achieved 26.02 person-days against the labour budget of 23 crore person-days, till January 2018.
In 2015-16, in terms of generation of person-days, the State ranked second in the country while in 2016-17, it was ranked third.
On the programme implementation side, the state’s performance in achieving convergence with different development programmes has been appreciated nationally and as recognition to this exemplary achievement, the West Bengal Government received the award for excellence in Mahatma Gandhi NREGA implementation from the Government of India. UNI
