New Delhi, Jul 28 : The Congress today raised an uproar in the Rajya Sabha over the alleged abduction of its MLAs in Gujarat, forcing adjournment of the House twice, the second time till 1200 hrs. Soon after the laying of papers, Deputy Leader of the Congress Anand Sharma claimed that party MLAs in Gujarat were being abducted . 'Our MLAs are being abducted in Gujarat. It is a misuse of power ,' Mr Sharma said. To this Deputy Chairman P J Kurien said that it was not a matter to be raised under Point of Order. Parshottam Rupala of the BJP said it was an internal matter of the Congress. Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi said the matter has not bearing to the House and that the Congress should approach the Election Commission in the matter. He said the Congress should put its own house in order and not waste the time of Parliament. Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad , however, said that the matter had a direct bearing with the House. 'There is a Council of States whose members are elected by the MLAs of the state assembly. It is the duty of the House to protect their rights,' he said. He said that one of the three MLAs who resigned from Congress have immediately been given tickets to contest elections. 'This is being done keeping the Rajya Sabha elections in mind. You should be ashamed," he said. There was an attempt recently to abduct a Congress MLA in Gujarat, he stated. Soon after, Members of the Congress were in the Well shouting slogans against the government. Amid the uproar, the Deputy Chairman adjourned the House for ten minutes, till 1132 hrs. When the House reassembled, Mr Sharma said the issue had serious implications for Indian democracy. When the Deputy Chairman said he could not do anything in the matter, Mr Azad said he could direct the EC to hold free and fair elections to the Rajya Sabha. However, the Deputy chairman said the EC did not need his directions. Soon after the Members of the Congress were in the Well again, shouting slogans against the government. Amid the uproar, the Chair adjourned the House till 1200 hrs. UNI
