New Delhi, Jul 29 :Government is mulling a proposal to set up Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority in order to convert the functional independence of National Nuclear Regulator, Atomic Energy Regulatory Board, into de jure independence to further strengthen nuclear and radiation safety regulations in the country. Minister of State For Personnel, public grievances and Pensions Dr Jitendra Singh today said,"In this direction, Government had introduced the Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority Bill, 2011 in the Lok Sabha in September 2011, which was subsequently referred to the Department related.' 'The amendments proposed by the Parliamentary Standing Committee were incorporated in the Bill in the year 2013,' he told. 'The Bill, however, could not be taken up for consideration before the dissolution of the 15th Lok Sabha,' Mr Singh said. 'Therefore, a fresh Bill similar to the one introduced earlier, is under examination,' the Minister noted. The proposed Nuclear Safety Regulatory Authority will provide statutory basis to nuclear safety regulation in India, thus insuring its de jure independence, and will further bolster nuclear and radiation safety regulations in the country.
