New Delhi, Jul 31: The Supreme Court today slammed the former Uttar Pradesh government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav in 2004 for not having a clear stand on the issue of providing public funds to the Etawah based Chaudhary Charan Singh college in the state. A two-judge bench of the apex court, headed by Chief Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar and also comprising Justice D Y Chandrachud, today granted two weeks time to file a detailed reply to the Uttar Pradesh government in the case. The top court was hearing a petition filed by one Mahendra Nath Rai, claiming that the former UP state government led by Mulayam Singh Yadav had allegedly funded the Chaudhary Charan Singh college in Etawah by transferring more than Rs 100 crores of public money to it. "How the state government can misuse the public funds," the CJI observed while hearing the plea. The plea filed by Rai claimed that there was an illegal funding of more than Rs 100 crore by the Mulayam Singh government in 2004, when it allegedly funded the public money to the Etawah college. The apex court observed that neither the state government was taking responsibility of misusing the public funds nor it was willing to return the funds. UNI
