Washington, Jul 16: The US House of Representatives has passed two important Bills-one on boosting defence cooperation with India, and the other on imposing tougher conditions on US aid to Pakistan. The Defence policy Bill worth 621.5 billion dollars requires the Secretary Defence and the Secretary of State to come up within three months with a strategy to strengthen cooperation between India and the US in the defence sector. After the Bill is passed by the Senate too and it becomes law, the State Department and the Pentagon will have to develop a strategy to address common security challenge. The defence policy bill was moved by Indian-American Congressman Ami Bera. It was passed by a voice vote by the House as part of the National Defense Authorisation Act (NDAA) 2018, beginning October 1 this year. In another important piece of legislation, the House okeyed provisions imposing tougher conditions for reimbursement of defence funding to Pakistan. The aid will be conditional to Islamabad showing satisfactory progress in combating terrorism. The Bill specifically names Haqqani network in north Waziristan against which Pakistan has to take action. UNI
