Delhi, Sept 15: Former Finance Minister P Chidamabarm today targeted the
CBI for allegedly harassing his son Karti in the Aircel-Maxis case. The senior
Congress leader’s son had been called by the CBI for questioning but he did not
appear, arguing that the special court had discharged all the accused and
closed the case. However, the CBI has disputed this claim. The case relates to
the Foreign investment proposal given clearance by Mr Chidambaram in 2006 when
he was finance minister. In a series of tweets, Mr Chidamabaram accused the CBI
also of spreading misinformation. "In Aircel-Maxis, FIPB recommended and I
approved minutes. CBI should question me and not harass Karti
Chidambaram," the former Finance Minister tweeted. "CBI spreading
misinformation. In Aircel-Maxis, FIPB officials have recorded statements before
CBI that approval given was valid," he said in another tweet. The CBI in
its charge-sheet submitted to the court had said that Mauritius-based Global Communication
Services Holdings Ltd, a subsidiary of Maxis, had sought approval for an
investment in Aircel. This approval should have come from the CCEA,which was
the competent authority to take any decision in this regard, but the proposal
was cleared at the level of then Finance Minister. UNI
