Lone Zebra in Nandankanan Zoo dies inside its enclosure

Bhubaneswar,Sep 25: The only male Zebra at Nandankanan brought from Israel in 2015 was found dead inside its enclosure this morning. Nandankanan Zoo Deputy Director Jayant Das said here was no symptom of weakness till last night. The Zebra accepted normal feed and movement was normal. He suspected that it might be due to last night heavy lightening that caused his death. Mr. Das said, however, the exact cause of death will be ascertained after postmortem by veterinary college experts. The Nandankanan Zoo has no more Zebras to exhibit. The Zoo authority is trying to contact other zoos for bringing Zebra in exchange of other animal. On May 30 last a two-and-a-half-year-old male zebra who was sick last year but recovered later died in the Nandankanan Zoo. The Zebra had fallen sick during December 2016 for 15-20 days but later recovered. The animal suddenly left food and was under treatment but died due to congestion of several organs inside body forming a blood mass followed by internal hemorrhage, as reported by the experts who conducted the post mortem. Nandankanan Zoo sources said three female and two male zebras were brought to Nandankanan Zoo from Tel Aviv, Israel in September, 2015.
