Kolkata,
Oct 23: In a first-of-its-kind intuitive, the West Bengal Government has
decided to provide training in the 2,000-year-old martial art of taekwondo to
medical students studying in the government medical colleges. Earlier, certain
all-India institutions did provide martial arts training to its students, but
this is the first time that a State Government would be providing the training.
Not just medical students, any health worker, nurse or official posted in these
medical colleges can attend the taekwondo classes. There are 13 medical
colleges in Bengal. Martial arts not only teaches self-defence but along with
it, self- confidence, stress management, showing respect to others,
communication, etc., and it is these other aspects that are being looked into
as equally important lessons for the students. These aspects are essential for
becoming a well-rounded person, and service to people being the essential motto
of doctors, these are of equal importance along with professional skill. UNI
