New York, Oct 26: (UNI) Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has stated that India was among the fastest growing economies in the world and would shortly overtake China. “Madhya Pradesh will take a significant part in that growth,” he said here on Wednesday at a luncheon organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. “MP should do well in order for India to march ahead,” he added. The central state of Madhya Pradesh is setting up a solar plant in Rewa district with a 750 megawatt capacity – considered the largest of its kind in the world. Similarly biogas and other non-traditional sources are also being tapped. According to Mr Chouhan, the quality of wheat produced in the state –which has a 20 per cent growth rate in the farm sector for the last five years -- is among the best in the world. Twenty-two cities are being developed as “smart cities” and the state tops in India on various fronts. “Nobody in the state will be left behind by 2022 as far as the housing situation goes,” Mr Chouhan said, adding that metro rail projects were being taken up in Bhopal and Indore, the political and commercial capitals respectively of Madhya Pradesh. There will be a conference on “Friends of MP” on January 4 and 5 to tap further investment opportunities in the state, the 58-year-old leader said. Currently only seven per cent of horticultural products are processed in the state and efforts are being made to raise the figure significantly. Exports of various consumer goods, including snacks, from the state will also be taken up. Focus is being given on schoolchildren’s health by teaching them yoga and providing them more nutritious food. Mr Chouhan said, “It was not easy to bring in GST (Goods and Services Tax) in a country like India. But Prime Minister Narendra Modi was determined to introduce the one-nation, one-tax policy.” He described GST – an amalgamation of 17 taxes -- as the most reformist measure since Independence. The Chief Minister noted that his Bharatiya Janata Party and government believed in Sarve Janah Sukhino Bhavantu, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam and Atithi Devo Bhava philosophies. Describing the bilateral relationship as “very deep,” the Chief Minister said both the US and India were jointly fighting terror, not just for their sake, but for the entire world. The Chief Minister -- who is on a weeklong tour of the US -- visited Washington earlier in the week. He arrived in New York on the night of Tuesday. Mr Chouhan is scheduled to leave Newark (in neighbouring New Jersey) for Mumbai on Saturday. This is his second official visit as the Chief Minister. Earlier, Chouhan had visited the US in 2015. UNI
