New Delhi, Oct 10: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday thanked the people of Maharashtra for giving the BJP an impressive victory in the Gram Panchayat polls. "I thank people of Maharashtra for the impressive win of BJP in Gram Panchayat polls across the state," Mr Modi said in a tweet. He also put across his missive to the people of the western Indian state in Marathi. "Wonderful victory of @BJP4Maharashtra in rural areas shows the unwavering support of the farmers, youth & poor for BJP's development agenda," the Prime Minister said in another tweet. According to reports, the BJP nominees were elected in 1,457 panchayat samitis as Sarpanch, followed by Congress (301), Shiv Sena (222) and NCP (194). It was for the first time in the history of gram panchayat polls in the state that the elections for Sarpanch post were held directly. The outcome of the results assume significance both for the BJP and state Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis as lot of anti-BJP campaign was built up in the rural areas. UNI
