Delhi, Oct 16: The much awaited elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress
president is likely to happen before October 30, sources said on Monday. The
sources said Congress' Central Election Authority chairman Mullapali
Ramachandran has given to party president Sonia Gandhi a tentative schedule for
the election of party president before October 30. The process of election to
Congress units in various states is complete and the stage is finally set for
the likely elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as party president, replacing his
mother Sonia Gandhi. In recent weeks, Congress units in various states have
passed resolutions seeking elevation of Mr Rahul Gandhi as Congress president.
In fact, Ms Sonia Gandhi had on Friday indicated that the elevation of Mr Rahul
Gandhi as the party president could be done “soon". “Soon it will be
done,” she said when asked by reporters at a function here as to when Mr Rahul
Gandhi, who is at present the vice president of the party, will be elevated.
The final schedule of election to the post of the Congress President will be
finalised by Congress Working Committee, which is scheduled to meet in the
coming days. In recent years, there has been a rising chorus for the elevation
of Mr Rahul Gandhi as party president. Party sources say that Mr Rahul Gandhi's
elevation is likely to enthuse party workers ahead of the assembly elections to
Himachal Pradesh and Gujarat, scheduled to be held by year end. UNI
