New
Delhi, Oct 13: The Union Law Minister and BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad
on Friday wondered how could senior Congress leader P Chidambaram be
"oblivion" about national security issue vis-a-vis Rohingya immigrants.
"Chidambaram has been country's Home Minister. He had replaced Mr Shivraj
Patil in the wake of November 26, 2008....How can he be completely oblivious to
issues of national security. This is the very big question," Mr Prasad
told reporters when asked to comment on several eminent citizens including Mr
Chidambaram and Shashi Tharoor writing a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi
urging him to rethink about India's stand on Rohingya immigrants issue. “As an
aspiring global leader of the twenty first century, India cannot afford to
adopt a short-sighted approach to what has now become a monumental, global
crisis. Our actions must now align with our ambitions. In the absence of
strong, international leadership, India has the opportunity to craft a bold, new
approach and pave the way for a new kind of leadership”, they said in the
letter. The letter was also signed by former Union Home Secretary GK Pillai,
lawyer Prashant Bhushan, NCP leader D P Tripathi, lawyer Kamini Jaiswal and
human rights activist Harsh Mander. On Mr Tharoor signing the letter, Mr Prasad
said, "Mr Tharoor often shoots from his mouth but why is people like
Chidambaram gave his name to this". The Union Home Ministry had told the
Supreme Court that Rohingyas were a threat to national security and the
Government cannot allow them to stay in India. The letter from eminent citizens
including the likes of Mr Chidambaram has said that the Indian government
should make use of "diplomatic clout" to pressure the Government of
Myanmar to end the security crackdown in Rakhine, respect the rule of law and
ensure the eventual safe and unhindered return of those Rohingya who wish to
return to Myanmar. UNI
