New
Delhi, Oct 6: Farmers from Tamil Nadu protesting in the national capital
are planning to move the Supreme Court against the National Green Tribunal
Order banning holding of protests in the Jantar Mantar area of the city. The
farmers say the Ramlila Maidan, the alternate site for protest suggested by the
green body, is away from the seat of power, so the purpose of staging protest
there will not be served. The green tribunal passed an order on Thursday
banning all protests and use of loud speakers and asked the New Delhi Municipal
Corporation to remove the tents from the protest site. Mr Prakash, a member of
the protesting farmers body, National South Indian River Inter-Linking Farmers
Association, said the farmers would obey the rule but they have the right to
approach the higher court. "We will obey the rule and will fight against
green tribunal's order in Supreme Court. We have four weeks time to vacate the
place. There are many procedures. Jantar Mantar is the centre of the city and
all the peoples are coming to meet us and our protest, including the
politicians. Ramlila is far away from here and out of Delhi. Ours is not a
fight for an individual but for the entire farmers in the country,"
Prakash told UNI. The Tamil Nadu farmers are protesting at Jantar Mantar for
the last 83 days asking for various demands, including higher price for
agricultural produce, a crop insurance scheme for individual farmers, waiver of
farmers' loans from public sector banks. S Dakshinamoorthy, another protesting
farmer, says their leader P Ayyakkannu currently is in Tamil Nadu and once he
was back they would think about the next course of action, including moving the
Supreme Court against the ban. The farmers body is in consultation with other
protesters in Jantar Mantar, including the Ex-Servicemen body on the issue.
Tamil Nadu farmers body had started their protest in April this year in protest
against the increasing number of farmers suicide. They called off the strike
after 41 days when Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Eddapadi K Palaniswami and Union
Minister of State for Finance Pon Radhakrishnan met them and gave them
assurances. But the farmers allege that the assurances given by the ministers
were not fulfilled and they were compelled to come back to back to Delhi to
protest again. UNI
