Ahmedabad, Nov 28: In the midst of high-pitched election campaign in Gujarat, two prominent community-based leaders Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakore on Tuesday exuded confidence that the 22-year-long BJP rule will come to an end in the state this time and the Congress will be able to form government.
Stepping up his attack especially against BJP chief Amit Shah, Hardik Patel, convener of Patidar Anamat Andolan Samiti (PAAS), blamed Mr Shah for the police firing on Patidar youths in 2015 and compared this role as that of 'General Dyer' of the infamous Jallianwallah Bagh Massacre.
Mr Patel said as many as 14 Patidar youths lost their lives in the police action in 2015 when the community youths had come out on roads demanding reservation for the community -- which is otherwise considered 'upper caste' and also well to do.
Hardik Patel also said that the Congress strength in the 182-member assembly will jump up to 100 while the BJP, which is eyeing as many as 150 plus, would be reduced to 70-75.
Sharing similar sentiment another caste-based leader Alpesh Thakore, who is also contesting on Congress ticket, claimed the Congress strength in the assembly will shoot up to 125 -- that is about two-third in the assembly.
Mr Thakore, also the chief of Thakore Sena, claimed that BJP's situation is so bad that big heads will roll and even Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel will be humbled in the elections.
While Mr Rupani is seeking re-election from Rajkot West and is pitted against him is Congress leader Indranil Rajguru; Nitin Patel,BJP's Patidar face, is contesting yet again from Mahesana.
Alpesh Thakore, who is contesting on Congress ticket from Radhanpur, told an election meeting here on Tuesday that while in the name of development only 'roads' have been developed and renovated, - "it is also true that alongside these roads, poverty and unemployment also grew up".
Even slum dwellings nearby the river front did not see any development and the state today has about 60 lakh unemployed people. UNI
