Gujarat, Nov 29: Just 10 days ahead of the assembly elections, Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday offered prayers at Somnath Temple here and sought blessings for the party’s prospects in Gujarat.
The Congress will now head to the districts of Visavadar, Savar Kundla and Amreli, where he will participate in the roadshow, corner meetings and public gatherings.
Minister Narendra Modi, who is currently holding rally at a distance of 25 km, took a jibe at his visit to the temple and “Those who are visiting Somnath Temple, has any idea about its history.”
Modi’s comment was in reference to country’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s letter to deputy Prime Minister Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel opposing reconstruction of the temple and stopping then President Rajendra Prasad from inaugurating the temple, citing it would be against the ethos of secularism.
Gandhi will stay in the state for two days, where he would address scores of rallies to garner votes for the party’s candidates.
Congress is working tirelessly to revive its prospects in the state after being out of power for 22 years. UNI
