New Delhi, Nov 22: The Congress on Wednesday welcomed Patidar
leader Hardik Patel's acceptance of 'Congress formula' on the vexed reservation
issue in Gujarat and said it would be proper now for both sides to contest the
crucial state elections together.
"I was in Ahmedabad for detailed
discussions (with Hadik Patel)...we tried to discuss all issues. He had
presented his points of views. We have tried to keep the constitutional matter
in mind. Today, Hardik Patel said he accepted the Congress stand on the issue.
I am very glad that he has said so," senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal
said here. So both sides will be contesting the elections
together, he said. The Congress reactions come close on the heels
of Mr Hardik Patel announcing that the Congress party has accepted their demand
for reservation in education and jobs. Mr Patel, the convenor of the Patidar Anamat
Andolan Samiti (PAAS), told reporters in Ahmedabad that the Congress has agreed
to table a bill in the Gujarat Assembly if it comes to power. The PAAS leader -- who has also come under
attack by a section of leaders in PAAS -- also said that his party was in
favour of provide reservations to Patels or Patidars without tampering with the
50 percent limit as per the constitutional norms. UNI
