Delhi, Nov 15: The Supreme Court on Wednesday decided to hear the petition
-- in connection with the implementation of its 2006 judgement on Police
Reforms -- against many states for not implementing its orders.
However, the apex court has not fixed any date for hearing the matter. In its 2006 judgement, the Supreme Court had delivered a historic judgement in Prakash Singh vs Union of India instructing central and state governments to comply with a set of seven directives laying down practical mechanisms to kick-start police reform. The contempt petition filed by BJP leader Ashwini Upadhyay claimed that certain states were not implementing the court's order and thereby the contempt proceedings should be initiated against those states. Upadhyay mentioned the contempt petition matter related to the police reforms before the apex court three-judge bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Dipak Misra and also comprising Justices AM Khanwilkar and DY Chandrachud, which decided to hear it.
