Shuntki fish production to get impetus

Kolkata, Nov 13: In order to make good the full potential for selling shuntki (or ‘dried’) fish to other states as well as exporting it to newer destinations, the West Bengal Government is laying stress on quality control during processing – washing, drying, preserving and packaging,  in this case.

Currently, shuntki from Bengal has high demand in states like Assam and Odisha and in Bangladesh too. Benfish, the nodal agency for the state’s fishery cooperatives, operating  under the Fisheries Department, has taken the lead in educating fishermen and exporters and everybody else concerned about health-friendly quality control methods as well as providing necessary help in order to implement them. The Central Institute of Fisheries Education is aiding the State Government in this. Shuntki fish production in Bengal primarily takes place in the coastal districts of Purba Medinipur (primarily in Digha, Mandarmani, Shankarpur  and Junput) and South 24 Parganas (primarily in Bakkhali, Frasergunj and  Kakdwip).
