New Delhi, Nov 8: The 17th United Nations Military Observer's Course (UNMOC) is underway here to make them learn and share the knowledge and nuances of United Nation Peacekeeping operations.
Military personnel across the globe are participating in this course. The three-week-long course was based on the latest version of the UN peacekeeping training programme, included three modules -- basic theories, special skills and comprehensive exercise. Welcoming the participants here, Lt Gen AK Sharma, Director General Staff Duties (DG SD) said, “The training curriculum at the Centre is designed to equip you with adequate knowledge about the scope, parameters, challenges and finer nuances of peacekeeping operations. It will acquaint you with the organisation, capabilities and functions of the UN system and roles within which you have to function with special focus on responsibilities of Military Observers as well as Staff Officers.” Further commenting on scope of peacekeeping, Lt Gen Sharma said, “Soldiers serving under UN command as peacekeeping observers or troops, wearing their familiar blue berets or blue helmets, are being joined by increasing number of civilians. Together, they have been given even more challenging mandates. Humanitarian tasks have been brought within the purview of peacekeeping; giving opportunities to peacekeepers to even participate in the reconstruction of state institutions.” “You as Military Observers and Staff Officers may confront several challenging situations, testing your patience, resilience, endurance and resolve. You have to be at a high level of competence to surmount such challenges, so that your country and the UN would be proud of you as their flag bearers,” he added. The Indian military has assigned over 1.8 lakh military personnel accumulatively since it began to engage in the UN peacekeeping operations in 1950. At present, 7049 Indian military personnel are carrying out missions in seven peacekeeping mission areas. UNI
