New Delhi, Dec 21: The government on Thursday fielded noted cricketer and nominated member Sachin
Tendulkar to deliver his maiden speech in a short-duration discussion in a bid
to break the logjam in the Rajya Sabha over the Congress' demand for an apology
from Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his Pakistan conspiracy remarks against
his predecessor Manmohan Singh and on 2G spectrum acquittals.
The attempt, however, failed as Congress members were adamant
on their demand and created a ruckus prompting Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu to
adjourn the House for the day.
Even as Mr Tendulkar was on his feet in the post-lunch session to open the discussion on the future of sports in India, Congress benches raised slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party. They were heard saying that Government should stop trying to mislead the nation.
Trying to bring the House to order, Mr Naidu requested the agitating members to allow Mr Tendulkar, 'a Bharat Ratna and a legendary cricketer,' to deliver his maiden speech.
He said number of attempts had been made to break the deadlock even outside the House but there was no consensus. UNI
