Ahmedabad, Dec 14: The Congress on Thursday charged Election Commission with working under pressure from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and also under PMO.
The Congress charge has been countered by the BJP, which said the Opposition party is 'unable to stomach Prime Minister's popularity".
Senior Congress leader Ashok Gehlot told reporters here that the Mr Modi's "road show" after casting vote is a clear case of violation of the model code of conduct.
"Election Commission, it seems is working under pressure from PM and PMO," he said.
Sharing similar sentiments, Congress spokesman Randeep Singh Surjewala said the Election Commission has compromised.
"What EC is doing actually puts Election Commission in poor light," Mr Surjewala said referring to the poll panel not taking action against the Prime Minister for his speech at FICCI session on Wednesday wherein he had among things charged that the non-performing assets of banks under UPA was one of the biggest scams.
"Election Commission has become a puppet of Prime Minister," he said, adding the poll panel is 'prostrating" before Mr Modi.
Reacting to the charges, BJP IT cell chief Amit Malviya said in a tweet, "Congress is unable to stomach PM Modi's unprecedented popularity. It is doing what it does best - attack institutions, in this case the ECI. It was the same EC, Gujarat and Ahmed Patel's election to Rajya Sabha - Congress was all praise for the EC then.
Sore losers? #Voted4Vikas". UNI
