New Delhi, Dec 5: Rebel Janata Dal (United) leader Sharad Yadav, who was disqualified from Rajya Sabha on Monday, said he respects democratic values and will continue to do so not only for the people of Bihar but the country as a whole.
Reacting to his removal from the upper house, he said if he was disqualified because he respected democratic values and the mandate given by the 11 crore people of Bihar to the Mahagathbandhan, then "I will continue to do so,' he said in a couple of tweets from Gujarat on Tuesday.
Rajya Sabha Chairman M Venkaiah Naidu on Monday disqualified Mr Yadav and his colleague Ali Anwar as members of the Rajya Sabha on a complaint by RCP Singh of the Nitish Kumar-led JD (U).
Mr Yadav, who is campaigning in Gujarat for the six tribal candidates that the party has put up in alliance with the Congress, said he had been disqualified because he spoke for the Mahagathbandhan (grand alliance) which was formed to defeat the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in Bihar.
Mr Yadav said he was disqualified from Rajya Sabha because he stood by the Mahagathbandan which was formed to defeat the NDA in Bihar and which, after 18 months, was broken to join the NDA to remain in power. “If to speak against this undemocratic style is my fault, I will continue to fight to save democracy,’’ he said in his tweet.
Mr Yadav was disqualified for attending a rally organised by the estranged Rashtriya Janata Dal and others which the JD (U) maintains was a violation of the party directive.
On his part, Mr Yadav said that for Mr Nitish Kumar to break the Mahagathbandhan (to join the NDA) for which the people voted to bring JD U) to power in Bihar, was a violation of people’s faith and democratic values.
He said he attended the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan rally in August as it was a prior decision of the party.
In a message from Gujarat, Mr Ali Anwar said he had heard the news while he was addressing an election rally in Rajkot.
“I have been informed that Sharadji and I cease to be members of Rajya Sabha with immediate effect. But I know that to make me fall, several people have fallen,’’ he said.
Earlier, the Yadav faction lost the use of arrow symbol of the JD (U) as the Election Commission decided in favour of the Nitish faction. The matter is pending decision in the Delhi High Court. UNI
