New Delhi, Dec 16: New Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday lashed out at the BJP for what he said was trying to spread the politics of 'hatred' and also charged Prime Minister Narendra Modi with trying to emerge as the only "voice of reason" in the country.
"We are now being compelled to imagine that businesses can be built without harmony that only one man himself is the voice of reason. Expertise, experience and knowledge can be cast aside for personal glory," Mr Gandhi said in his maiden speech as the head of the country's oldest political outfit.
He said while Congress is actually an ancient idea, "BJP would have you believe they are oldest idea in the universe".
Delivering his speech in presence of outgoing Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, he said rather in a tongue-in-cheek fashion, "......as usual this is not the truth. In India, there are two ideas that hav clashed, idea of self verses the other".
Mr Gandhi, 47, was earlier handed over the certificate of his election by senior Congress leader Mullappally Ramachandran, the chairman of the Congress Election Authority.
In reference to BJP leadership and workers, he accused, they were trying to "be soldiers fighting for self" and asserted that Congress in contrast is "guided by service of community".
"You have an example in front of you, once fire breaks out it is difficult to douse it, that is what we are telling the people of BJP, that if you set the nation on fire it will be difficult to control," he said in reference to enthusiastic party workers bursting crackers in joyous mood but unable to stop when asked.
"Today BJP has spread the fire of violence across the country," he charged. UNI
