New Delhi, Dec 12: The Supreme Court on Tuesday indicated that it was impossible to suspend the
jail sentence of a convict, AG Perarivalan, in the May, 1991, Rajiv Gandhi
assassination case.
The electronics engineer, who had supplied two
batteries which were used to detonate the human bomb, had sough remission of
the rest of his life term sentence.
Perarivalan had also challenged the MDMA (Multi Disciplinary Monitoring Agency) probe in the case.
Union of India opposed the plea of Perarivalan and had stated that it was not of the opinion for remission of his jail sentence.
Today, the Centre failed to file a reply in the apex court in the matter.
The Supreme Court asked the Union government why it wanted adjournment of the case.
Perarivalan contended that there were loopholes in the probe.
The division bench, led by Justice Ranjan Gogoi, asked the Centre and the Central Bureau of Investigation to file their detailed responses in the matter, and set January 24 for the next hearing. UNI
