Delhi, Dec 29: In a major setback to Essel Mining Company Private Limited,
the Supreme Court on Friday rejected its plea to grant more time to deposit the
rest of the money, out of a total of Rs 1,800-crore, with the state government
of Odisha by December 31, 2017, in the illegal mining case.
One of the lawyers, appearing for the mining company, said,
the plea of the Essel was dismissed by the apex court vacation bench on Friday.The company, in its plea, had pleaded for a direction from the apex court seeking more time to deposit the rest of the money, out of a total of Rs 1,800-crores, since they had received the notice late.
"The plea filed by Essel Mining Company Private Limited isdismissed. We did not find any merit in the petition," the vacation bench of the top court said in its order.
The Essel, submitted to the apex court vacation bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, that it had, in fact, paid a part of the penalty, and rest would be paid shortly and thereby sought more time.
The apex court, however, did not find any merit in the petition filed by Essel and thereby dismissed it.
Now after the dismissal of Essel's plea, they will have to deposit the rest of the amount out of a total of Rs 1,800-crore with the state government by December 31, this year in order to facilitate and continue their mining activities in Odisha. UNI
