Washington, Dec 13: US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has said that the country is ready to
begin talks with North Korea 'without preconditions'.
Addressing the Atlantic Council think tank in Washington on
Tuesday, Mr Tillerson said, "We're ready to have the first meeting without
precondition."
The Secretary of state’s remarks appeared to mark a shift in state department policy, which had previously required proof of North Korea's nuclear disarmament.
"We can talk about the weather if you want. We can talk about whether it's going to be a square table or a round table," Mr Tillerson was quoted as saying by China's state news agency Xinhua.
"Can we at least sit down and see each other face to face, and then we can begin to lay out a map, a road map, of what we might be willing to work towards," Mr Tillerson said.
His remarks came two weeks after North Korea successfully test-fired a newly developed Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, drawing strong condemnation from the international community.
Both the countries have been exchanging harsh rhetoric in the past months, with US President Donald Trump threatening to rain down "fire and fury" and "totally destroy" Pyongyang. UNI
