Bengaluru, Jan 15: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday ordered a police inquiry into a serious incident where the body of a TV journalist, who died in a motorcycle accident in Haveri district on Sunday night was taken in a garbage van.
The body of Mounesh Potaraj (28), a reporter with Kannada 'Suddi TV' Channel, was bundled into in a garbage van along with his bike by the police who took help of three attendants. The scene was caught live with the policeman saying that 'a journalist died in an accident and we are carrying his body to the hospital'.
This triggered widespread resentment among the people and mediapersons after the body was taken to Haveri district hospital morgue.
The incident occurred on the fateful day when the reporter riding alone on the two-wheeler was reportedly dashed against a tree and died on the spot.
Mr Siddaramaiah immediately ordered a probe into the incident leading the the death of Mounesh. He said in a twitter message. 'I am reading this and I am pained. I have asked ADGP and Commissioner of Police (Traffic and road safety) to get a report into the incidence from the IGP (Northern Range) and take action.
Haveri Superintendent of Police K Parusharam said there was no other vehicle at the accident spot, so the body and the two-wheeler was taken together (in a garbage tractor trailor).
He maintained that the police department do not own any vehicle to carry the deceased as ambulances do not carry dead bodies unless post-mortem is conducted. So, the police had to arrange for a vehicle from the spot.
To make things difficult for the dead journalist's family, the health officials in Haveri hospital delayed the post mortem and allegedly demanded bribe, Mounesh’s older brother Madadeva told reporters.
It may be a common person or a prominent member of social life including a journalist in Karnataka that died. But can a person be given such inhuman treatment, Mahadeva asked. UNI
