Mumbai, Jan 4: City police on
Thursday issued a search warrant against Gujarat Independent MLA and Dalit
leader Jignesh Mevani and JNU student activist Umar Khalid.
The step came close on the heels of the
cancellation by authorities of All India National Students Summit 2018 at
Mithibai College Auditorium in Vile Parle, which the two were scheduled to
address.
Police has also prohibited assembly around Mithibai College.
Several students belonging to Chhatra Bharti who were protesting the cancellation of the event were taken into preventive custody.
Pune Police, meanwhile, has registered an First Information Report against the two leaders for their alleged "provocative" speeches at an event in Pune on 31 December.
A case was registered under Section 153(A) (promote violence), 505 (public mischief) and 117 of the Indian Penal Code.
Chhatra Bharati is the student wing of the socio-political group Lok Bharati, led by Maharashtra MLC Kapil Patil. UNI
