Kolkata, Feb 13: The West Bengal Government has decided to set up a Rs 108-crore project in
Hasnabad in North 24 Parganas district, on the Ichhamati River, with Israeli
machinery, to turn brackish water into drinkable sweet water.
This project by the State Public Health Engineering
Department for converting brackish water will be able to convert both river and
lake water.
The North 24 Parganas district faces the problem of arsenic in ground water, and the rivers and many of the lakes in the Sundarbans region of the district record brackishness in water at 42 to 45 per cent.
Hence, this converting of brackish water will provide a sustainable source of drinking water.
The government already provides drinking water piped from the Hooghly River. UNI
