New Delhi, Feb 16: BJP is getting set to woo the de-notifed, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes who
are seeking inclusion in the reserved categories of Scheduled Castes, Scheduled
Tribes and Other Backward Class.
It has fielded Uma Bharti, the fiery OBC face of the party to
preside over a national conference here on Saturday on the issue.
Over 700 representatives of these tribes will participate in the conference.
Recently Ms Bharti, who is the Minister for Sanitation and Drinking Water, had announced that she will not contest the 2019 Lok Sabha elections and will work for the party.
She said she was not in the fray for the chief minister's post in Madhya Pradesh which is slated for Assembly polls later this year. She was the state chief minister in 2003-04.
Ms Bharti will chair the conference to look into the problems of de-notified, nomadic and semi-nomadic tribes and the status of their inclusion in Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Class lists so they could be come in the main stream of development process and and benefit from the welfare schemes of the government.
Clearly, with several political parties wooing the Dalits and Backward communities in preparation for elections in several states this year and general elections next year, the BJP does not want to be left behind.
It may be pointed out that the Centre had constituted a National Commission for Denotified, Nomadic and Semi-Nomadic Tribes with a mandate to identify and prepare state-wise of such tribes, their inclusion status in Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Other Backward Class and the habitats where they are densely populated.
The Commission also had the mandate of evaluating the progress of development of these tribes for upliftment of these communities. UNI
