New Delhi, Feb 24: Continuing its attack on the Government on the Rs 11,400-crore PNB bank scam, the Congress on Saturday said the NDA was escaping responsibility in the matter.
Talking to reporters here, AICC senior spokesperson Kapil Sibal, reacting to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley blaming the regulators for the frauds, said, 'with every passing day, new bank frauds are coming to light. However, the Government is running away from responsibility.
It is not fair to blame only the regulator. What about the political system.. A nominee of the Finance Ministry was on the board of the PNB and other banks. I want to ask as to what was his role?'
Referring in this regard to the case relating to a Delhi-based diamond jewellery exporting company and its directors defrauding the Oriental Bank of Commerce, to the tune of Rs 389.85 crore, Mr Sibal said the case was registered nearly after six months after OBC filed a complaint with the central agency.
CBI on Friday registered a case against a Delhi-based diamond jewellery exporting company and its directors after receiving a complaint from OBC, which alleged a fraud to the tune of Rs 389.85 crore. Dwarka Das Seth International Pvt Ltd, a Karol Bagh-based company, deals with manufacturing and trading of diamond, gold and silver jewellery.
'The bank filed a complaint with CBI in this regard in August 2017. However, CBI registered a case only in February, 2018 by which time the culprit had fled the country,' Mr Sibal said.
On the PM's assertion at the Global Business Summit on Friday that the Government was taking stringent action in the cases of financial irregularities, Mr Sibal said despite coming to power on the plank of removing corruption, the NDA government had failed to appoint a Lokpal.
'A government which talked about corruption and Lokpal is silent on the appointment of the Lokpal. The Supreme Court had recently directed the Government to appoint a Lokpal,' he said. UNI
