Balasore, Feb 06: India's first intermediate range ballistic missile 'Agni' was successfully test
fired from the Abdul Kalam Island ,off Odisha coast this morning.
The test fire of the surface-to-surface Missile, described as
Agni I variant, was carried out by the Strategic Forces Command (SFC) of the
Indian Army at 0835 hours from launch complex 4 of the Abdul Kalam Island.
The two-stage Agni incorporates a slightly modified Augmented Satellite Launch Vehicle(ASLV) design in its second stage.
Agni I missile has a short range of around 650 kms. The surface-to-surface Agni-missile, a key delivery system in India's nuclear deterrent profile, could carry a pay load of one tonne .
Defence sources said the surface-to-surface missile zoomed into the clear sky as the defence officials watched it from the Abdul Kalam island in the Bay of Bengal.
