13: The Hindu festival of Maha Shivratri is being celebrated with zeal and
religious fervour across Kerala on Tuesday.
Devotees cutting across age barriers thronged Lord Shiva temples in various parts of the state and performed special poojas and offered worship. Major Shiva temples including the Vadakkunnathan Temple in Thrissur, Maha Deva Temple at Vaikom in Kottayam, Ernakulam Shiva Temple and Sree Kandeswara Temple here witnessed heavy rush from early this morning.
Meanwhile, thousands of devotees offered 'Bali Tharpanam' to the departed souls of their ancestors on the banks of Periyar River at Aluva in Ernakulam District, Parasurama temple here and Thirunelly temple in Wayanad.
Devaswom Board, the Administrative body of temples in the State, has made elaborate arrangements for 'Bali Tarpanam' on the banks of rivers to perform the ritual and hundreds of priests have been deployed to assist devotees. Performing the ritual on the midnight of Shivratri is considered auspicious by the devotees. Hundreds of police personnel were deployed to take care of the security situation. Cultural programmes are also being organised in many temples. UNI
