Bhubaneswar, Feb 28: Ruling Biju Janata Dal(BJD) candidate Rita Sahu has secured
an early lead of over 15,000 votes over her rival BJP candidate Ashok Panigrahi after
completion of the seventh round in the counting of by election to the Bijepur Assembly seat in Odisha.
Official sources said at the end of seventh round while BJD candidate Rita Sahu had
polled 38814 votes, BJP candidate Ashok Panigrahi had garnered 23739 votes. Congress candidate Pranaya Sahu had got a miserable 2083 votes.
The by election in Bijepur was necessitated following the demise of Congress candidate Subal Sahu whose widow Rita Sahu is contesting the by election as ruling Biju Janata Dal candidate.
On the other hand, BJP candidate Ashok Panigrahi who had in the past won the Bijepur Assembly seat once in 2000 Assembly election and defeated to Congress candidate in 2004 Assembly election as BJD candidate, is in the electoral battle this time as BJP candidate.
Political observers feel that the trend in all the seven round completed so far has given
a clear indication of the winning prospect of the ruling Biju Janata Dal candidate.
However, a clear picture will be emerged after few more rounds as there will be total 21 rounds of counting.
The by election witnessed a record 82 per cent polling and the battle for ballots was
mostly confined to ruling Biju Janata Dal, the BJP and the Congress although there
were altogether 13 candidates in the fray.
The counting trends has upset the Opposition Congress which has captured the Bijepur Assembly seat in the last three Assembly elections consecutively. UNI
