New Delhi, Feb 15: Rate of inflation, based on Wholesale Price Index, declined to 2.84 per cent in January, a low of six months.
The decline was due to fall in prices of pulses, wheat and cereals with manufactured products, according to government data released on Thursday.
In December 2017, the wholesale inflation was 3.58 per cent, compared to 4.26 per cent in January, last year. This is the lowest level of wholesale inflation since July last year when it fell to 1.88 per cent. 
According to the figures released by the Ministry of Commerce and Industry here, the price of pulses has declined by 30.43 per cent, wheat by 6.94 per cent and cereals by 1.98 per cent compared to prices in January last year. 
The inflation rate of food items is three per cent.
In other food items, onion prices have almost tripled compared to that a year ago. Its inflation rate is 193.89 per cent. Vegetables prices have increased by 40.77 per cent. Paddy prices rose by 4.59 per cent, potatoes by 8.68 per cent and fruits by 8.49 per cent. The price of milk has also increased by 3.93 per cent. 
In January, the inflation rate for manufactured products was 2.78 per cent. Due to decline in prices of sugar by 5.70 per cent, the inflation rate of manufactured food items was below zero to 0.94 per cent. Prices of oil and fat products also increased by 1.26 per cent. 
Among other manufactured products, prices of basic metals increased by 12.91 per cent, steel by 7.47 per cent, paper and its produce by 6.03 per cent, other products excluding machinery increased by 4.78 per cent. 
Fuel and power segment's inflation rate was 4.08 per cent. LPG with 19.89 per cent has been expensive compared last year. Prices of diesel rose by 7.07 per cent and petrol by 1.21 per cent. UNI
