New Delhi, Mar 5: Battle of wits, punctuated by sarcasm, prevailed in the early part of the first
day of the second part of Budget session of the Lok Sabha on Monday with
members making oblique reference to the fiercely contested elections and the
outcome in three northeastern states, especially Tripura.
Before the proceedings began formally, several Bharatiya
Janata Party members including Nishikant Dubey, greeted opposition MPs by
salutation 'Chalo Paltai (Come, Let us Change)' - the BJP's slogan that turned
to be successful in dethroning Communist Party of India -Marxist from Tripura
after two decades in power.
BJP members were also heard telling Trinamool MPs that West Bengal is next target.
Among the Opposition members Dinesh Trivedi and Sudip Bandyopadhyay (both Trinamool) returned the greetings with folded hands.Mr Bandyopadhyay remarked: "We are eyeing Red Fort" - a reference to the upcoming 2019 general elections.
Several BJP members and Union Ministers, including Rajnath Singh, were seen wearing tribal scarves. This was perhaps to drive home the point that the BJP has been able to make significant impact among tribal voters in the northeast.
In Tripura, BJP and its ally Indigenous Peoples' Front of Tripwra won all the 20 Scheduled Tribal reserved seats while in Nagaland out of 20 seats BJP contested, the Lotus party could return 12 MLAs.
However, in Meghalaya, where BJP recorded a quantum leap in vote percentage, it could win only two out of the 47 seats it fielded candidates.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi was received in the House by thumping of desks by Bharatiya Janata Party members as he is being chiefly credited for the party's electoral successes in the three northeastern states, specially the Left-ruled Tripura.
Telengana Rashtra Samiti members were seen interacting frequently with Trinamool MPs. This came in the background of both the parties lately talking about formation of a viable third front to take on Indian National Congress and the BJP. UNI
