New Delhi, Mar 6: Claiming that scams of Rs 73,635 cr have come to light during the rule of the NDA at the centre, the Congress on Tuesday questioned the continued silence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the matter.
The Congress also charged the NDA government of running away from a debate on the issue in Parliament.
Talking to reporters here, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala said,’’fraud, malfeasance, bank loot, cheating and swindling of banks and common people are getting unravelled every day, even as the PM and the FM are on an indefinite ‘maun vrat’. The money swindled in the bank scams unearthed recently comes to Rs 54318 cr. In addition, shocking information available through the RTI on February 9, 2018, now reflects that under the BJP government’s watch, frauds and scams of Rs 19317 cr have been reported in India’s economic capital i.e the Economic offences wing, Mumbai alone in the last three years. This takes to Rs 73,635 cr the total amount of frauds during the rule of the NDA government. What is even more astonishing is that 184 accused in these scams and frauds have escaped. The Modi and the Fadnavis governments appeared to have given a ‘one way ticket’ to ‘cheat and scout’.’’
Questioning the continued silence of the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on the issue, Mr Surjewala said,’’it is time to tell the people as to how many fraudsters have already left for foreign shores and tax heavens. Even more inexcusable is the fact that out of Rs 19,317 cr, a pittance of Rs 2.5 cr could be recovered. India demands a switch from ‘Nirav Modi (silent Modi) to ‘Bol Modi’ .’’
Earlier, addressing reporters, leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge charged the government of running away from a debate on the bank scams.
’’The entire opposition is united on their demand for a discussion in parliament on the bank scams that have come to light over the past few days. We had given an adjournment notice under rule 50 to discuss the PNB scam and other bank frauds. However, the business advisory committee listed in the agenda a discussion under rule 193 in which the wording and the subject has been completely changed to include the irregularities in the banking sector since its inception.
If the government wants a discussion on this subject, it can be held as a separate debate. However, the opposition wants a discussion in the recent bank frauds. In this regard, I have talked to leader of the All India Trinamool Congress Sudip Bandhopadhyay, BJD leader Bhartruhari Mahtab and several others and they also agree on this issue. However, the government is running away from the discussion on this,’’he said.
He said that party leaders had talked to Lok Sabha Speaker on this issue but their demand was not considered.
He said that till the opposition demand for discussion on the PNB and other bank scams was accepted, they would continue to agitate. UNI
