New Delhi, Mar 14: In a strong attack on the Government after the Finance Bill was passed in the Lok Sabha without any discussion, the Congress on Wednesday charged the NDA Government at the Centre with muzzling democracy and running away from discussion on issues of public importance.
Talking to reporters here, AICC spokesperson Jyotiraditya Scindia said, 'today is a black day for democracy. The way the biggest financial documents of the country was passed in the Lok Sabha amid din without any discussion or without seeking any views from the Opposition parties is a blot on Indian democracy.'
Mr Scindia said from day one of the session, the Opposition has been saying that they want a discussion on issues of public importance but the Government was running away from discussing these issues.
'From day one of the session the Opposition has been saying that they want a discussion on various issues of public importance and in this regard we also met the Speaker on Tuesday.
'However, it is the allies of the Government that are coming to the Well of the House to disrupt proceedings. We had issued an adjournment motion for discussion on the PNB scam. However, the Government listed a discussion under Rule 193 on a subject that was completely different from the wording of the adjournment motion that we had issues,' he said.
Accusing the Government of not being interested in talking to the Opposition to resolve the ongoing standoff, he said, 'though the Speaker convened an all party meeting to resolve the impasse, the Government did not even once call the Opposition parties for discussion. If this is not the evidence of the arrogance of the Government then what is?
'This Parliament is a body of representatives of the people and muzzling it voice is akin to throttling the voice of the people. In the business advisory committee it was decided that discussion should be held on the various aspects of the Budget and the Finance Bill. Also, issues like bank scams, the lack of funds for the modernisation of the armed forces and farmers' distress are important issues that need to be discussed in Parliament. However, the Government is running away from a discussion on these issues.' UNI
