Islamabad, March 13: Pakistan and Iran want to "deepen" connectivity between the
ports of Gawadar and Chahbahar which are being developed by China and India
respectively, saying this would benefit people of the two countries.
After Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif held talks with his Pakistani counterpart Khawaja Asif on Monday, the Pakistan foreign office in statement said, "The foreign ministers underlined that as two brotherly neighbouring countries Iran and Pakistan would deepen connectivity between the two sister ports of Gawadar and Chahbahar to benefit from their complementarities,"
Zarif is on a three-day visit to Pakistan. He is accompanied by a large trade delegation from Iran.
Earlier while delivering a lecture at the Institute of Strategic Studies Islamabad (ISSI) that was held to commemorate 70th anniversary of establishment of Pak-Iran diplomatic relations, Zarif said Iran had asked Pakistan to participate in Chahbahar seaport project and development of its link with Gwadar Port.
“We offered to participate in the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor. We have also offered Pakistan and China to participate in Chahbahar,” Dawn newspaper quoted Zarif as saying.
Zarif also met Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Javed Bajwa and National Security Adviser Lieutenant General Nasser Khan Janjua on Tuesday.
During the talks with Asif, the two sides "agreed to continue engagement for enhancing economic cooperation, including bilateral trade, investments and commercial interaction to promote shared prosperity," said the foreign office statement.
Abbasi spoke about Pakistan’s desire to enhance mutually beneficial economic cooperation with Iran
and that the two countries should make efforts to enhance bilateral trade to $5 billion by 2021, reports the official Associated Press of Pakistan.
They also explored ways of developing cooperation in banking sector, operation of the gas pipeline, multilateral cooperation and regional issues, fight against terrorism with special focus on confronting Daesh, according the Iranian news agency IRNA.
