New Delhi, Mar 16: The victory in the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar seemed to have briefly
calmed the Opposition members in the Lok Sabha on the tenth day of the resumed
Budget Session on Friday.
All members were seen sitting on their seats as soon as the
House met for the day with no banners being displayed or sloganeering. In sharp
contrast to the scenes prevailing in the House since March 5, no member rushed
to the well to the House.
Contrary to scenes in the House for last nine days, the House could function in calm for about 15 minutes.
Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan administered the Oath of Affirmation to the newly elected members -- RJD member Sarfaraz Alam from Araria (Bihar), two Samajwadi Party MPs Nagendra Pratap Singh Patel from Phulpur and Pravin Kumar Nishad from Gorakhpur from Uttar Pradesh.
Newly elected MPs were seen showing their respect to senior parliamentarians including L K Advani, Arun Jaitley and Sonia Gandhi.
The Speaker then read out obituary references of three former members -- Uttambhai Harjibhai Patel, Dr
Bolla Bulli Ramaiah and Susheela Bangaru Laxman -- and renowned British Physicist and Cosmologist
Stephen Hawking.
Speaker pointed out that the scientist Hawking had achieved so much in his life by braving through immense hardships and hurdles.
Ms Mahajan also condemned the attack on nine CRPF jawans by Maoist rebels in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma
district on Tuesday and condoled the deaths of security personnel.
A brief silence was observed in memory of the departed.
Immediately after that, Opposition Members, including the Telugu Desam Party, YSRCP, AIADMK, trooped inside the Well raising anti-government slogans and raising placards.
N Chandrababu Naidu-led TDP on Friday morning also announced quitting the BJP-led NDA and said the party will move a no confidence motion against the Modi government to press for a detailed debate on why and how the Special Category Status has been denied to the 'bifurcated' state of Andhra Pradesh.
The Speaker started the Question Hour but could not proceed amid the Opposition ruckus. She adjourned the House till 12 noon. UNI
