Chandigarh, Mar 7: The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) will honour Navjot Kaur, the country’s first
wrestler to bag a gold in the Asian Wrestling Championship, with a cash award
of Rs two lakh.
SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal gave this
assurance to Navjot and her family members when they called on him as well as
Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Kaur Badal on Wednesday.
Interacting with Navjot and her family members, Mr Badal said the wrestler’s win would give a boost to wrestling in Punjab and encourage other girls to follow in her footsteps. He commended Navjot for making a comeback into the sport after a major injury and rising to the occasion to win gold for the country.
He also requested the Punjab government to appoint Navjot as a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). He said the earlier appointment of India’s Women cricket world cup star Harmanpreet Kaur as DSP was commendable and that the same criteria should be followed to appoint Navjot to the same post.
He said this would be a fitting tribute to the gutsy girl who had risen above her humble background to shine on the international stage.
“It will also send the right message to our sportswomen that Punjab is proud of them and will honour them appropriately for bringing laurels to the State”, he added.
Mr Badal also requested the state government to release a suitable financial grant to ensure Navjot was able to have access to top class training to prepare for the Asian Games as well as the Tokyo Olympics.
He said that earlier Navjot’s family had supported her dream at a great personal sacrifice despite their meager resources. UNI
